Courgettes belong to the same species as many squashes, Cucurbita pepo, which comes from the Americas and has been bred in Italy since the sixteenth century. At Forstamt the round varieties grow — the Tuscan ‘Tonda chiara di Toscana’, the dark ‘Eight Ball’ F1, the yellow round one — and the long climbing ‘Black Forest’ F1.

Care
Start under cover in April or May, plant out after the Ice Saints, allow about a square metre per plant. Water at the base, never over the leaves. Pick young — regular harvesting keeps new fruits coming.
